Radiation Effect in Silica Optical Fiber Exposed to Intense Mixed Neutron–Gamma Radiation Field
نویسندگان
چکیده
We measured in situ the radiation-induced absorption of pure silica core fibers exposed to a fission nuclear reactor. We observed the growth of the 1.39m OH vibration band in polymer coated fiber. Three mechanisms are responsible for this effect: recoil protons, hydrogen diffusion, and a probable compaction effect. Based on this experiment, a fiber-optic neutron monitor prototype is proposed.

Investigation of neutron flux by thermoluminescence dosimeters in the neutron-gamma mixed field
Introduction: Neutrons have many applications in various fields, such as medicine. The important application of neutron in medical science is in Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). Because of this, determination of neutron dose and flux is critical for the health maintaining of workers and patients exposed to this beam. The neutron radioisotope sources produce gamma rays in ...
متن کاملOrigin of the Radiation-Induced OH Vibration Band in Polymer-Coated Optical Fibers Irradiated in a Nuclear Fission Reactor
We measured in situ the radiation-induced absorption of pure silica core fibers exposed to a fission nuclear radiation. We observed the growth of the 1.38m OH vibration band in polymer coated fiber. Two contributions, a gamma-induced hydrogen diffusion and the recoil protons, are compared. The major contribution to the OH content growth is identified to originate from the gamma-induced hydrogen...
متن کاملQuantitation of genome damage and transcriptional profile of DNA damage response genes in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells exposed in vitro to low doses of neutron radiation
Background: Humans are exposed to ionizing radiation from different sources that include natural, occupational, medical, accidental exposures. Evaluation of the effect of low level of neutron exposure to human cells in vitro has important implications to human health. Attempts were made to measure genome damage, transcriptional profile of DNA damage response and repair genes in peripheral blood...
متن کاملFast-neutron radiation effects in a silica-core optical fiber studied by a CCD-camera spectrometer.
A simple CCD-camera spectrometer was deployed at the Los Alamos Spallation Radiation Effects Facility to characterize fast-neutron irradiation effects in several silica-based optical fibers over the wavelength range ~ 450-1100 nm. The experimental arrangement allowed optical loss spectra to be developed from remotely recovered frame grabs at various times during irradiation without it being nec...
متن کاملBehavior of Random Hole Optical Fibers under Gamma Ray Irradiation and Its Potential Use in Radiation Sensing Applications
Effects of radiation on sensing and data transmission components are of great interest in many applications including homeland security, nuclear power generation, and military. A new type of microstructured optical fiber (MOF) called the random hole optical fiber (RHOF) has been recently developed. The RHOFs can be made in many different forms by varying the core size and the size and extent of...
